- Litanies, Prayers, Virgin Mary
The Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Marian litany also commonly known as the Litany of Loreto because it is known to have originated there, at the Shrine of Our Lady of Loreto.
Pray the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary, or Litany of Loreto. This litany to the Virgin Mary is a public litany that was approved by Pope Sixtus V in 1587. This litany originated in Loreto, Italy at the Shrine of Our Lady of Loreto, and this is why it’s also known as the Litany of Loreto.
The Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary is meant to be prayed publicly with a leader to pray the versicles and a congregation to pray the responses, but it can be prayed privately too.
About the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary
The Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary was approved in 1587 by Pope Sixtus V. It is a popular prayer of supplication. Traditionally it was prayed in processions to prevent calamities, although it is often prayed privately, especially after the holy rosary. The Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary is one of six litanies approved for public recitation by the Holy See.
The congregation’s responses are marked with (℟.), and the leader’s versicles are marked with (℣.).
Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary with New Invocations
Pope Francis has updated this litany with 3 new invocations: “Mother of mercy”; “Mother of hope”; and “Solace of migrants”. According to directions, the invocation, “Mother of mercy” is to be inserted after “Mother of the Church”, “Mother of hope” after “Mother of Divine Grace” and “Solace of migrants” after “Refuge of sinners”.
