Ninja Foodi French Fries

After showing you how to make Ninja Foodi Sweet Potato Fries, I am sure you expected Ninja Foodi French Fries to swiftly follow.

Well the night before grocery shopping day and with it raining outside, us Milner’s had a craving for some Ninja Foodi cheesy chips.

I call them chips because as a British Expats, we always know fries as chips.

Plus, us Brits have a real thing for cheesy chips. A generous helping of grated cheese is loaded on top of our chips as they are served when the cheese has just melted and usually dipped into some mayonnaise.

Many British takeaways will sell their chips this way and they make an amazing naughty side dish to go with your pizza or doner kebab.

So, so yummy. But could we achieve Ninja Foodi chips aka fries using the Ninja Foodi Air Crisp? And how would they compare to our usual method using the Philips Air Fryer.

French Fries In Ninja Foodi

You are probably wondering how do you cook French fries in a Ninja Foodi? The process of Ninja Foodi French fries from scratch is much easier than you think.

Instead of using your Ninja Foodi for pressure cooking food you are using the Ninja Foodi Air Crisp button.

You can use any type of French fries that you like, though note this recipe is for homemade French fries and if you want frozen I recommend you head to our Ninja Foodi Frozen French Fries post instead.

If you have a favourite type of thickness of your French fries then you are welcome to stick with that. You can do skinny French fries, steak fries, regular cut, or even thick like oven chips.

However, the air fryer crisp that comes with the Ninja Foodi is slower than a regular air fryer. As I am sure you have guessed, this means that if you are cooking thick steak fries in the Ninja, they will have a longer cook time.

Instead of loading peeled and sliced fries into a deep fat fryer, you are loading them into your air fryer crisp basket instead. The texture of the basket is similar to a deep fat fryer basket and will hold a lot of fries if you are a big family.

What I love most about cooking French fries in Ninja Foodi is that it is much easier to clean compared to a regular air fryer. Any mess goes into your Ninja Foodi cooking pot as well as your crisp basket. You can remove the bottom off your crisp basket to make cleaning even easier. Then a quick wash for them with soapy warm water and you are done.

Where Does The Oil Go In A Ninja Air Fryer?

One question that always gets asked is where does the oil go in a Ninja Foodi. Well the quick answer is that the oil goes directly on the food.

Instead of the deep fat fryer method when food is submerged in oil, a little oil is tossed on the food instead.

Imagine you are deep frying fries and that you would throw the fries into the oil.

But when you air fry you place a small amount of oil in a bowl with your potatoes, then mix the potatoes and oil with your hands. Then place the potatoes into the air fryer basket. Any excess oil then goes into the bottom of the bowl and is discarded.

The quick version of a French fries in Ninja Foodi goes as follows:

  1. Peel and slice potatoes into fries.
  2. Load into a bowl with seasoning and oil.
  3. Mix with your hands.
  4. Air fry + serve.

There is a little more to it than that, but those are the simple basics!

How Long To Cook French Fries In Ninja Foodi?

Ninja Foodi French Fries Cook Time is 33 minutes. This is based on cooking a ¾ full basket of fries and having a medium slice on them. If they were thinner, they would cook quicker.

We also tried a couple of different temperatures. But found that when we increased the temperature the fries were dry.

Compare this to a standard air fryer with a cook time of 20-25 minutes, it is much longer in a Ninja Foodi.

But the fries are still delicious, you just have to have patience with the extended cook time.

Ninja Foodi Cheesy Chips

If you love my idea of cheesy chips, then they are easy to recreate in your Ninja Air Fryer. Simply add grated cheese 2 minutes before the end of cooking. Spread the grated cheese out so that it has an even coating. Then carry on cooking. When you come back in 2 minutes you will have perfectly melted cheese.

Reheating French Fries In The Ninja Foodi

If you would like to reheat your French fries in the Ninja Foodi this is easy too. Simply load your cold fries into the air fryer basket and spray with some extra virgin olive oil.

By adding the olive oil, it stops the fries from being as dry when they are reheated.

Then cook for 5 minutes on 160c/320f before serving.

Notes

Seasonings. You can mix and match seasonings depending what you are pairing with your fries. Instead of garlic salt try a teaspoon of Cajun, or oregano, or garam masala. All work well with air fryer fries.

Cheesy. If you have a thing for cheesy chips, then 2 minutes before the end of cooking add in some grated cheese and let it melt as it finishes cooking.

Even. It is recommended to have an even cut on your French Fries. If not your bigger fries will end up undercooked and your thinner ones will end up overcooked.
