Calculating time zones is simple and involves adding or subtracting an hour for every 15 degrees of longitude.

There are six time zones in the US main country. The 50 US states are spread across the six standard time zones. With dependencies (inhabited and uninhabited), however, the total count comes to 11 time zones.

There are 24 regions (Time Zones) around the world with a time difference of one hour. This system has been adopted internationally by setting the total time difference around the world as 24 hours. Further, Daylight Saving Time (DST) is individually adopted in countries and regions.

The earth spins through 360 degrees in 24 hours, meaning that in one hour the earth spins through (360÷24=)15 degrees. This means that, technically, as you travel around the earth, each 15 degrees of longitude difference in the location of places means that they should have a time difference of one hour.

In the United States, time is divided into nine standard time zones covering the states, territories and other US possessions, with most of the country observing daylight saving time (DST) for approximately the spring, summer, and fall months.

Sir Sanford Fleming, who worked as an engineer for Canadian railways, knew this problem firsthand when he missed a train in 1876. This experience gave him the idea for a standard time, with hourly variations according to different zones around the world.
