What is a Scotch egg?

A scotch egg is a boiled egg (hard or soft) wrapped in sausage meat, coated with bread crumbs, and deep-fried or baked.

The history of the scotch eggs is very interesting. Some say scotch eggs are derived from an Indian dish Kofts by the British. Others say they originated in England in the 19th century.

But today in the UK Scotch eggs are available in supermarkets, grocery stores, and even the gas stations. However, in the US scotch eggs are available in many British-style pubs and served with dipping sauces.

Scotch eggs are more like a takeaway snack just grab them and enjoy.

Making scotch eggs are super easy and simple. I love making this recipe mostly for my holidays and my family loves air fryer scotch eggs. They are less oily compared to the deep-fried ones. Air fryer hard boiled eggs are an easy and quick method to boil eggs for the recipe.

Ingredients for air fryer scotch eggs

  • 500g pork sausage meat
  • 4 boiled eggs
  • 2 raw egg
  • 1 cup bread crumbs
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper
  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil

Instructions for air fryer scotch eggs

  1. Boil the eggs, peel the, and set them aside.
  2. Take a mixing bowl to add all-purpose flour, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix them together until they are well combined and set aside.
  3. In another bowl crack 2 eggs, beat them and set them aside.
  4. Divide the sausage meat into 4 equal parts and shape them into a patty. You can either shape them in your hands or lay a plastic wrap and spread the sausage meat into a patty shape.
  5. Place the boiled eggs in the middle of the sausage patties. Wrap each egg within the sausage patties so that the eggs are not visible.
  6. Evenly distribute the patties around the egg for the evenly cooked results.
  7. Place the eggs wrapped with sausage patties into the eggs wash and let the excess run off. Roll them into the flour mixture tap the excess and again place them into the egg wash let the excess run off. Finally, coat them with the bread crumbs and shake off any excess.
  8. Repeat the process for the rest of the eggs.
  9. Brush a thin layer of oil on the air fryer basket and preheat your air fryer at 200C/400F for 2-3 minutes.
  10. Carefully place the scotch eggs into the air fryer basket in a single layer and lightly brush them or you can skip this process.
  11. Cook the air fryer scotch eggs at 200C/400F for 12-15 minutes until they turn golden brown. Flip them halfway through the cooking process and brush a thin layer of oil for the best result.
  12. Remove the air fryer scotch eggs from the basket serve and enjoy with your favorite dipping sauce.
